Unix wurde fast vollstaendig auf C umgeschrieben
In der Folgezeit wurde Unix auf die meisten Rechnerarchitekturen portiert
Minix, ein Lehrbetriebssystem mit offenen Sourcen fuer wenig Geld wurde veroeffentlicht.
Fuer Minix waren die meisten Unixprogramme verfuegbar (z.B. die Entwicklungswerkzeuge von GNU) aber z.B. keine graphische Oberflaeche.
Linus Benedict Torvalds schreibt den ersten Linuxkernel (Version 0.01).
Die ersten Linuxkernel mussten noch mit Minix crosscompiliert werden.
Linux (Version 0.12) wurde zusammen mit den passenden Entwicklungswerkzeugen von GNU das erste mal per FTP veroeffentlicht.

Inzwischen ist Linux ein vollwertiges Unix System, auch wenn es sich aus rechtlichen Gruenden nicht UNIX (TM) nennen darf.
Inzwischen sind kommerzielle Unixkonkurrenten wie SUN oder SCO dazu uebergegangen, ihre kommerziellen Unix-Betriebssysteme fuer die Kopierkosten dem Privatanwender zu Verfuegung zu stellen. Vor 10 Jahren waere das noch voellig undenkbar gewesen.
